Figure out who you are. Then do it on purpose. Dolly Parton
Born in Port Chalmers, I started my work life as a clerical worker, union organiser and educator, and journalist. I moved to my current home city of Wellington, and in 1990 I branched out into showbiz, forming the comedy and singing telegram duo Glory Box with Therese O’Connell.
Since then, I have carved out a joyously varied career.
From the late 1990s through to the early 2000s, I starred as Jenny Shipley in television’s McPhail & Gadsby. Lorae Parry also starred in the show as Helen Clark, and together we created a stage show with our characters – Leading Ladies – which we toured extensively.
I have both written and starred in other shows, including my one-woman show Pinky Pops In, as well as ensemble shows An Evening With Elvis-Anne, Grumpy Old Women and Party Girls.
With Lorae Parry, I co-wrote and starred in Circa Theatre hits The Truth About Love, The Candidates, and the sell-out political comedies Destination Beehive 2017, and Destination Beehive 2014. We also wrote the play Sex Drive which debuted at Circa Theatre in 2011, as well as 2017’s pantomime Peter Pan, continuing Circa Theatre’s legacy of annual pantomimes.
Over the years I have been a member of the women’s comedy group Hens’ Teeth. I am a long-time contributor to RNZ National, wrapping up the week’s news with Te Radar and Kathryn Ryan.
In 1996, I became a celebrant, and that remains the most important, rewarding work I do.
In 2004 I was invested as a Member of the New Zealand Order of Merit (MNZM) for my services to entertainment.
I am married to Allan Abbott, and we are encircled by a large, loving extended family. I am a proud step-mum and Nana.
